This raku fired ceramic sculpture titled “Retinal Cone” explores the connection between fire and color, imagining how these two elements impact our lives.
“Retinal Cone” interprets the literal retinal cone of the human eye; a bullet shaped form which allows the brain to perceive color, specifically in bright light. The size of the cone is exaggerated while the jet black steel base elevates the represented importance of color in our existence.
Flashes from the raku fire flare along the sides of the form while rainbow colors randomly appear around the body. The tiny white ‘eye’ represents the window that allows the exterior world into our interior spaces.
“Retinal Cone” is a Raku fired, wheel and slab built sculpture sat atop a custom built steel cradle and stand. Designed and created by a local Floridian artist.
“Retinal Cone” stands 12.5″ T x 16.5″ L x 9″ W.
